Council and Committees

Introduction

The Council of the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Saskatchewan operates under an explicit set of governance policies. It strives to make its work as transparent as possible to the medical profession and the general public.

Those portions of the Council's deliberations that are not confidential are open to observation by any person subject to space availability in the College boardroom.

At the conclusion of each Council meeting an Executive Summary of the meeting is widely distributed to the District Medical Associations, related organizations and the public media. This Executive Summary provides a brief overview of issues discussed, decisions made, and/or actions taken by the Council. If any person wishes more detailed information about any of the issues which are not subject to confidentiality constraints, these can be obtained by contacting the Office of the Registrar at 101 - 2174 Airport Drive, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan S7L 6M6; Phone: (306) 244-7355; Fax: (306) 244-2600; e-mail: OfficeoftheRegistrar@cps.sk.ca.

Public Access to Council Meetings

Across Canada steps have been taken to make the work of statutory professional regulatory bodies more transparent to the professionals they regulate and to the general public. Opening meetings of the governing bodies of such agencies to the profession and the public is one mechanism which enhances organizational transparency. In general, organizations have reported positive response to this policy decision.

Since December, 1996, a portion of the College Council meetings have been open to the public.

Council meetings are open to the public for all governance related matters. Where matters deal with policy related to litigation and personnel issues, Council will be in camera. There may be occasions during the open session that the President makes the determination to discuss a particular issue in camera. The President will announce his/her intention.

Agendas will be available the Monday prior to each Council Meeting. For specific meetings, seating is limited. If you would like to attend the Open Session of Council please email Sue Waddington at OfficeoftheRegistrar@cps.sk.ca who will be pleased to advise you of availability of seating.

No right is extended to public observers to actively participate in meetings and no recording devices or cameras are permitted without the permission of the President.
