Joint Statement: Long Term Care - Authorized Prescriptions                                                                   

The SCPP, the CRNS, the CLPNS, and the CPSS have issued a joint statement regarding verbal orders generated from Long Term Care (LTC) Facilities. A pharmacist may only accept a verbal or faxed original order written and signed by an authorized prescriber e.g. physician, NP, dentist, etc. A pharmacist may not accept a verbal or faxed written order (transcribed) from a nurse.

 Public consultation - Opioids and Chronic Pain Guideline

Invitation for public comment: Opioids and Chronic Pain Guideline                                                                   

(Deadline: 12pm ET February 29, 2024)

The Michael G. DeGroote National Pain Centre guideline group along with their guideline panel, with financial support from the Substance Use and Addictions Program (SUAP), formulated eleven evidence-based recommendations and one good practice statement for the update of the 2017 Canadian guideline on Opioids for Chronic Non-Cancer Pain. The aim of these recommendations and good practice statement is to provide evidence-based guidance for healthcare providers, patients, caregivers, policymakers, and the public.

The Centre is publicly posting a draft of their recommendations and good practice statement until February 29th to seek input prior to publication and dissemination. Comments are welcome from anyone interested in providing feedback including health care professionals, researchers, policymakers, representatives of industry and insurance companies, people with lived experience, caregivers of people with lived experience, and members of the public.

DRUG ADVISORY: Methylfentanyl detected in Saskatchewan

This advisory is to alert to the presence of methylfentanyl as a brown powder and/or grainy substance and tested in laboratory by Health Canada. Fentanyl was also detected as a co-occurring substance These substances are likely new to the community and individuals may be unaware that they are consuming it. These substances are associated with overdoses or deaths.

 Tramadol Reclassification

NOTICE -  Amendment to prescribing requirements for tramadol
As of March 31, 2022, tramadol will be removed from the Prescription Drug List (PDL) and listed in Schedule I of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA). Tramadol will also be listed as item 19 in the Schedule of the Narcotic Control Regulations (NCR) and therefore subject to all the regulatory requirements set out in the CDSA and NCR.  Details
